ONE DRIVE SAVE FILE NAME ERRORS

Hello

I'm using Excel via 365 and for the past few weeks a new error has begun appearing. Whenever I open an excel or word file I can get the error message 'this file name has been renamed. We recommend saving it now to get the new name', however I have not made any file name changes at all. In Excel, If I ignore the error then I get an additional error saying 'SAVE NEEDED. we need you to save this file to finish the renaming. Add-ins and VBUs might not work correctly'. Saving the file seems to remove the file name entirely and it just replaces it with 'excel' as a name but the errors persist.

I've tried loads of things to try and remedy it but the only thing that's worked is by unlinking my OneDrive (where everything is backed-up/saved to). The error then ceases but after linking again it just starts up.

I've had no issue for years with this setup and haven't made any settings changes and am on the same device I've always used so unsure what's happened. Seems to be something dodgy with MS Office and onedrive working together.

I have critical work docs on excel so I don't want to screw anything up so if anyone has any pointers I'd be very grateful. I'm using Windows 10 on an old Asus laptop - I have over 50% of my onedrive storage left too.

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Understand that you are experiencing an error when opening an Excel or Word file. Is the computer in a domain environment? You can first try to create a new Excel and see if it can be saved normally. Of course, please close OneDrive and test locally on the device to avoid receiving errors from the OneDrive cloud. Also have you tried creating a new local account, creating a new local account can help you troubleshoot problems caused by user profiles.Manage user accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support If the problem disappears after creating a new local account, the problem may be caused by a lost or corrupted user profile for the original account. You can transfer the existing data to the new account.
