Separating Windows From Microsoft

If I one day stopped using Microsoft, but still needed my Windows computer, would I still be able to use Windows without a Microsoft account? The accounts seem to be tied (if I log in to Edge, it's my Microsoft account, and Windows Hello is connected to Microsoft). Would I be unable to use my Windows settings without a Microsoft account? Is it possible to separate them?

All right, thank you. I don't really want just a basic computer, so I will probably keep my account for the time being.

    Kendra_505,

If you have already setup Microsoft account on a PC and would like to remove the account (which is an Administrator account for the PC),

You will need to completely factory reset the PC to defaults. This will remove all your files, apps installed on your device and the operating system starts fresh.

To reset your PC > Go to settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC > Remove everything > Select Local reinstall. After the reinstallation, you can setup and sign in with your local account as said before.

Note: Yes, it turns your computer really basic and you only have limited access to all the applications. Also, if you use Microsoft Word for writing a lot, you will need a Microsoft account. So, signing in without a Microsoft account is not a good option for you. Hope you understand.!

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to help you further.

    Best regards,

    Gunasekar N

Well, my Windows is already set up (I've had an account for a while). I know I would lose access to a lot if I didn't have a Microsoft account, I'm just wondering if it is possible to separate Windows from Microsoft, especially after the account has already been set up (ie, Windows and Microsoft accounts are connected). The big issue of course would be that it would turn my computer really basic, and I'm not sure I want that. and I use Word for writing a lot, though there are other programs I could use.

Hello Kendra_505! I'm Gunasekar and I'd be happy to help you with your question.

Yes, you can use your Windows Computer without a Microsoft account. You can create a local account during Windows setup. This account doesn't require a Microsoft account and allows you to access your PC without needing an internet connection.

However, you will not be able to use most of the Microsoft services like Microsoft store, OneDrive, and other applications as well. Edge can be used without a Microsoft account, and you can set up Windows Hello with a PIN or fingerprint instead of a Microsoft account login. To enjoy a full Windows experience, you will need a Microsoft account on the device.
