Problem with highlighting text.

I can highlight one word, one line or the whole document but not a chosen part of document. This concerns new as well as old documents. It is not the touchpad since this works well in mail. Please advice.

If you left click at the beginning of the text that you want to highlight, and then move the mouse cursor to the end of the text and the hold down the SHIFT key and left click, is the wanted text select and can you then click on the highlighting button?
