Problem with Pivot Table - Excel interprets numbers as text.

Created a pivot table - but Excel consistently insists that some of the columns include text (and therefore won't sum). This despite the fact that I copied a column of numbers from a working field into the fields that generate the error. Moreover, I can sum and sumif against the exact same column; I just can't use the pivot table tool. These are definitely all numeric (I'm certain not a problem with spaces or other issues), and yet I still get the error.

In addition, I observe that when I try to change column headings in tables, I can find those new column headings with all the usual table tools (i.e., I can select those fields within the table or in other tables to perform calculations). But I still find old column headings when I try to select columns in field selector tools for pivot tables.
