    Hello Susan,

Are you using the desktop application or the browser Word program?

Paragraphs are shown in the Navigation Pane based on the outline level of the paragraph.

The built-in headings have such outline levels, The Normal style and Body Text Style and most others do not.

Click, in the body of your document, on something appearing in the Navigation Pane that should not be there.

What is the paragraph style applied to that text?

If you are saying that applying a Heading style reformats a larger text range than expected, ensure that your text paragraphs are separated by paragraph marks, ¶. Line breaks, for example, only creates a new line within a paragraph.

To show/hide paragraph marks, as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ icon on the Home tab.

If you can't get it sorted, consider sharing a sample document with the forum. You can upload your sample to (say) OneDrive or Dropbox, generate a download link and post that link in a reply here.

Hi Charles. I am using the desktop application. What is happening is when I create a new heading or subheading the text becomes part of the link. I need to know how to break that link, if that is understandable. All that I am trying to do is create a new chapter with several subheadings.
