Accidental multiple accounts

Office365 on my iMac is due for renewal on Oct 26. This time I purchased a renewal from Amazon which I duly activated on Oct 9. I have clearly done something wrong as I am now getting messages 'You have multiple accounts, please choose the account you want to sign in with". The situation is causing somewhat alarming conflicts on my Mac as I am constantly being asked to re-input my ID details, and getting warnings that if I cancel something it cannot be retrieved, for example. I used identical email address and password so I don't know how to be sure whether I am opening one account or the other. How do I cancel my original account (if that is indeed what I need to do) so that I can extricate myself from a situation which is almost due to my misreading the activation instructions?

If you purchased a renewal you use the same MS Account as your original sub.
