Version history missing for excel template containing (ODBC) connection

We are using Onedrive and Sharepoint, with version history active.

Which means that for each file a version saved whenever you save the file.

However - not for each file. We have business critical excel templates, which are changed now and then. These templates include one or more ODBC connections.

For these templates no version history is kept: every save of the template overwrites version 1.

Re3cently an error was, and we needed to restore an earlier version, and we found that (only for these type of templates) no version history was kept, and we lost relevant value - we need to re-create the template as it used to be.

Does anybody know how we can get version history to work for all files, including excel templates?

Note that for simple templates (without connections) version history does work, we tested that already

    Hi Theo van Westrienen,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

Per your description, you have already checked the existing previous versions of this file. In this case, I recommend you report the situation to your tenant admin or IT team and ask them to raise a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center> Support> Help & support. That support team there will have the correct channel and resources to help you investigate more and see if there is a way to get all previous versions of this file.

Also, we welcome community members to share ideas about the situation if one has related experiences.

Sorry for the inconvenience that happened to you. Appreciate your understanding and patience.

    Sincerely,
