Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Hello, Desmonda Lawrence
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
Office team has been experimenting with new Microsoft 365 subscription possibilities lately (including the AI tool Copilot). So with Copilot being added to Microsoft 365, users in certain areas may notice the addition of the Copilot service to Microsoft 365 app as well as a change in subscription fees. I fully understand the inconvenience this may cause, especially for some users who are not interested and do not wish to use this AI feature.
This community has received a lot of feedback from users with similar issues, and as community support staff, we are unable to change any of the subscription plan changes and app feature updates that have been made. However, what we can do is make it as easy as possible for you to continue renewing your Microsoft 365 subscription at the original price, as well as help you return to your pre-update Microsoft 365 apps without Copilot through an alternative program.
If you prefer to use Microsoft 365 apps without Copilot at all. Please refer to the following to try to switch back to your old subscription.
If you have not yet renewed at the higher price:
- Visitaccount.microsoft.com/services.
- Select the Microsoft 365 subscription you have and select “Manage”.
- Select “Cancel Subscription ”.
- View “Switch to a subscription that suits you better” and select “Microsoft 365 Personal /Family Classic”.
- After following the instructions to complete your subscription. Your subscription will automatically renew to Classic when its existing subscription expires.
If you have renewed at a higher price:
Please Contact Microsoft Billing Department for one to one assistance.
- Visit this website: Contact - Microsoft Support
- Type Contact in the search box.
- Now click Get help, and Select Contact Support or sign in to contact support below.
- Go to the Products and services tab, and choose either Microsoft 365 and Office category.
- On the Category tab, choose Manage My Subscription.
- Go to Confirm.
- You can now choose the option of Chat with a support agent on your web browser.
- Tell them you need to switch back to the Classic Subscription.
However, the above method is for switching your subscription to Classic and you will not be renewing your subscription to Microsoft 365 with Copilot, but since the update to the Microsoft 365 app has already been completed, you will not see the changes to the features and interface in 365 right away.
Unfortunately, there is no direct feature to toggle the display of the Copilot feature with a single click, however, since the change only appears in the latest version of Microsoft 365 (2410), some users can remove the Copilot service from Microsoft 365 by going back to the previous version (2409) of if you're willing to give it a try.
See the following if you are using Windows:
Restore your version of Office
- Close all Office software, in the "Start Menu", find "Command Prompt" (or "cmd"), right-click and select "Run as administrator" ;
- At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter: cd %programfiles% \Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun
- Then enter the following and press Enter
Officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.15427.20194
If the above steps are successful, you'll be able to view Office version 15427.20194 under File -> Account -> Product Information.
After restoring, open any Office application, such as Word, click File -> Account. On the right side, check the "Microsoft 365 and Office Updates" heading , click the "Update Options" button, and select the "Disable Updates" option to disable the auto-update feature.
This may be a temporary solution, but if you re-enable Office updates, the problem will reappear. So, in the long run, please submit your ideas to the Office team so they can consider designing and developing future features where users can choose whether to turn Copilot on or off.
- In any Office app, click File->Feedback.
I hope this is useful and please feel free to ask any questions.
