Hello,

I am trying to edit/delete a calculated column on a list that I created with inheritance of another list.
However, when I click on "add another column" and I choose "calculated value (formula based on another column), an error appears.
I tried to do it with the "mother list" and it worked, but with the inherited list it does not work.

    Hi CRTRZB,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

I have read your post carefully. However, I still have some questions about the situation you describe. Therefore, I would like to confirm the following points to you before making any suggestions.

    1. Regarding the thread title, you cannot edit or delete an existing calculated column. I would like to know if the error message appears when going to the Edit Column page as shown below.

Generally, you can go to the list, click Settings (the Gear icon) in the upper-right corner> List settings. On the List settings page, under the Columns sections, click on the relevant Calculated column and then click on the Delete button.

  2. Regarding the second line of your post "However, when I click on …. an error appears", my understanding is that once you choose the column type from the default option "Single line of text" to "Calculated", this error message appears.

If this is not the case, e.g., you are getting an error message after entering a formula and clicking OK to create a Calculated column, please point it out and let us know.

If this is the case, sometimes this can be a temporary problem. I recommend you open the Private browser window, access the list, and try to create the Calculated column again. See if the error message appears again.

  1. Regarding "… a calculated column on a list that I created with inheritance of another list", may I know how you created the inherited list? Did you use the built feature via New> List> From existing list?

Additionally, currently, I have searched for existing service incidents and have found one that is under investigation. As the incident is under investigation, I will need to wait for an update from the appropriate team to determine if it is related to the issue you are experiencing.

Service Incident ID: SP939349

Title: Delays or problems loading SharePoint Online sites

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation. 😊

Sincerely,

    Dear George,

Thank you for your reply, I have read it carefully.

    1. I have currently three calculated columns on my list, inherited from the original list. When I click on each of them (in the List Sections page), the error appears.
    2. You are right, the error appears when I try to create a calculated column. All of the other columns types can be created, this is the only one causing this issue. As you suggested, I tried in private browser window but the same problem appears.
    3. Yes, I built the inherited list with New > List > From existing list

I remain available if you need more information.

    Kind Regards,

    Corentin

    Hi Corentin,

Thanks for posting back and sharing the details.

Based on my search, the problem you are experiencing is not related to the service incident I mentioned in my first reply.

Based on your reply, the problem occurs when creating a new Calculated column or editing the existing Calculated columns in the list. This is not normal. I have tested this on my end and cannot reproduce the same issue. In addition, I did a lot of searching and testing and did not find any SharePoint settings that would cause this.

Since the issue only occurs with a specific list, I recommend you create a new list from the source list again. See if the newly created list still has the problem.

If not, you can delete the problematic list and use this newly created list.

If so, in this case, I recommend you open a support ticket with Microsoft for further troubleshooting.  You can contact your tenant administrator or IT team and ask them to raise a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center> Support> Help & support. That support team there will have the correct channel and resources to check your SharePoint environment remotely and find what exactly the reason has caused this.

Sorry for the inconvenience that happened to you. Appreciate your understanding and patience. 😊

    Sincerely,

    George | Microsoft Community Moderator
