Endnote corruption

I am using Word 16.78 (2019) on my Mac. I have a document with endnotes. Some endnotes have somehow become corrupted. For example, when I hover over number 59 in the text, there is no screen tip. When I hover over number 60 in the text, the screen tip appears but it links to endnote number 59. When I hover over number 61, it references endnote 60. Endnote 62 appears to be okay. Its screen tip references the correct number and citation. What can I do to fix this?

The most common cause is that the endnote, itself, was deleted rather than deleting the endnote number in the body of the document. That causes the sequential numbering to go out of whack because the stranded endnote number no longer is linked to an endnote.
