I have installed MS 365 but I cannot open an EXCEL, WORD etc docs. I have done a quick repair on Office (as suggested in another reply to a similar question) but the system continues to request that I sign in after I click on an icon (even though I am already signed in) and will not request a password after I have entered my email address.

You may have to remove your Office installation using the Uninstall support tool (see for example option 2 in the article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/uninstall-office-from-a-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8) and then start fresh with a reinstall.
My subscription is still active until March 2025.
OS is Windows 11 and all the MS apps are those that come with Microsoft365
Go to your online account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and verify that your subscription is still active.
