Tags Missing When I Change Pages/Sections/Groups

I have been struggling with getting one note tags to work well. It used to work great but then all the sudden the past month or 2 tags have gone missing. It will not show all the open tags in Tag Summary. I have close out the notebook and that worked for like a day or 2 and then I was back to not seeing all the tags. I pretty much have to be on the page of newly created tags or they will not show.

Do I have too much going on in my notebook? If so, seems like a huge flaw in the program ... but maybe? I have 1 notebook and lots of sections/section groups to help organize.

    Hi Drew 1,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

We are sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with tags missing from the OneNote notebook. I deeply understand the inconvenience this causes. Per your description, this is a large notebook containing a lot of content and you have tried reopening the notebook to temporarily fix the issue. Regarding your question, sometimes large notebooks are more prone to problems.

Since we are communicating in the community, I am not able to check your environment directly. Therefore,  I suggest you check the following points to troubleshoot. You can share the results with us, which will help us narrow down the situation.

    1. I suggest you try to repair OneNote and check again. See if the problem is caused by a damaged OneNote app.

Go to Windows Settings> "Apps & features" (or Apps> Installed apps)> type "OneNote" in the search bar. Check if you can see OneNote. If you have multiple OneNote applications installed, please note that OneNote and "OneNote for Windows 10" are two different apps.

If you can see OneNote, please click on the three dots, Modify, Repairand choose Online Repair.

If you don't see OneNote, it is included in the Office suite, you need to repair the Office suite. Find and click on the Office suite, such as Microsoft 365 for Enterprise - en-us, click on the three dots, Modify, Repairand choose Online Repair.

    1. I recommend you switch to another Windows user profile (if you don’t have another Windows user profile, please try the steps in the "Switch user" section and sign into another account, such as your personal account), run OneNote, and check again. This can help us to troubleshoot whether the issue is caused by the local environment in your original Windows user profile.

If the problem persists after trying the above suggestions, I would like to gather more information to troubleshoot.

    1. Please provide your OneNote version and Subscription Information.

You can click File> Account and check the relevant information as shown below.

  2. Since this is a large notebook, I would recommend you divide it into two and then check again.

You can create a new notebook, use the built-in Copy or Move feature to copy some sections to the new notebook, and then delete the original sections. After that, please check again.

Additionally, if the tags show up well in the new notebook, but still not in the original notebook, I recommend you Copy the last sections from the original notebook to the new notebook and then check again.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation. 😊

Sincerely,

George | Microsoft Community Moderator
