Why does Microsoft Defender interrupt my internet connection and how do I fix this?

I have a strong internet connection, but when I turn on Microsoft Defender, it disconnects me from the internet after about 30 seconds. How do I fix this? I want to take advantage of the built-in VPN. I'm on a brand new computer.

    Hi Natasha Ofman,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

    From your description, your Internet connection disconnected after about 30 minutes you turn on Defender.

    Did the network become connected after that automatically?

    Did the VPN turn on as soon as you turned on Defender?
