My PC just ran an update, and now I don't have permissions to access my own word documents. What the hell? This has happened before. Why the incompetence? Design updates that don't screw these things up.

Do you mean that you installed a Windows update? If the update causes trouble, you can uninstall it from Windows Update in Settings.
