We have a windows server 2008 R2 server running. around 15-24 Users used to connect to the server using RDP.

Now we are going to migrate it to a Windows server 2016. can we use/transfer the RDP licenses from the old server to the new one?

Please suggest the best method so that the users can connect the new server remotely.

Thanks in advance

    Hi,

May I know if the original 2008 R2 server is also our licensing server, and we will migrate the licensing server from 2008 R2 to 2016?

If so, please refer to below article for RDS CALs migration.

Migrate your Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs)

Meanwhile, if you also would like to know more about the RDS deployment migration. You could take below as a reference.
Migrate your Remote Desktop Services deployment to Windows Server 2016

Hope the information helps. If there is any further question, please feel free to contact us.

    Hi ElevenYu,

    Thanks for the response.
Yes, the original server (2008R2) is the licensing server.
I just want to make sure, we can use the same license or not.

    Hi,

If you mean the client access licenses (CALs), the answer is no.

Usually, 2008 CAL could only support connecting to 2008 server, and 2016 server needs 2016 or above CAL.

Please refer to below link for more detailed information.

    RDS CAL version compatibility

    Thanks,
