I'm trying to identify why there are two groups for a single sharepoint site. With same name, one is Modern Group and the other Sharepoint Group. Sharepoint site is established with work office 365 business account. Thank you.

    Dear NPikie,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

We are sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with identifying why there are two groups for a single SharePoint site. I deeply understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

I like to clarify why there are two groups with the same name on our SharePoint site. This occurs because one group is a Microsoft 365 Group, created for broader integration across services like Outlook and Teams, while the other is a SharePoint Group, used specifically for managing site permissions.

For example, the Microsoft 365 Group allows members to access all associated services, including the SharePoint site, providing a unified experience. On the other hand, the SharePoint Group can be used to manage permissions more granularly within the site. This means you can add users directly to the SharePoint Owners group to give them site-specific administrative rights. This setup offers flexibility and efficiency in managing permissions across our services.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or if there are any misunderstandings.

Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

Ralph Chawatama | Microsoft Community Moderator
