The server couldn't complete this action. Error Code: 0x803d0014 / Can I still use and synch with Onenote 2016?

In the last few days I've noticed that my windows desktop version of this app (2016) can't synchronise pages. Looking more closely the Synch progress message says "not connected" as the reason the synch is failing.

This has worked problem free until now. I also have Onenote on an Android device and that is still able to synch with Onedrive where my old remote file resides. I can see this via Onedrive and open the Note file online.

I read a Community thread which suggested to close and reopen the Onenote file locally to reestablish the Windows version connection. But having done that I cannot seem to be able to open the file at all locally now!

The same thread suggested creating a new Onenote file to see if this is a local issue. I have created a new Onenote file locally - the setup process then says that I have to share the new file via Onedrive (which I expected) when I do this however I get the error message above - error code 0x803d0014. The new Onenote file appears initially synch'd in Onedrive Documents directory, but the test pages created locally are missing, the file is just a shell.

I hope these are not all symptoms of Onenote 2016 now being unusable? Until the last few days I've had no synching issues at all. Thanks for any feedback

Hi Soli,

Thanks for posting back.

Regarding your question, there is no official article explaining this error code. It typically indicates a problem with syncing or opening online notebooks. Based on your reply, I suggest you try the following suggestions to troubleshoot further.

  1. Since your system is Windows 7, I recommend you run the Easy Fix Tool to add TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 Secure Protocol registry keys. After that, please restart your computer and check again.
  2. I suggest you switch to another Windows user profile, run OneNote, and check again. This can help us to troubleshoot whether the issue is caused by the local environment in your original Windows user profile.

If the issue still occurs after trying the above suggestions, I think it may be related to your Windows system. Would you be willing to upgrade your system to Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Appreciate your understanding and patience.

Sincerely,

George | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Hi Soli_gooner,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

In general, OneNote 2016 should work fine, and you should be able to use it to sync your notebooks. Since you mentioned that notebooks in OneNote for Android could be synced well, the problem is likely caused by the local environment on your PC. In this case, I would like to suggest you try the following suggestions and check again.

    1. Make sure you have enough storage space on OneDrive/SharePoint. I assume that your notebooks are stored in your account's OneDrive.

If they are stored in SharePoint, or they are shared notebooks, please point it out and let us know.

If so, to verify this, you can go to OneDrive for Web (go to www.office.com, search for OneDrive in the Search bar, and then click the OneDrive icon). You should be able to see your OneDrive storage in the bottom left corner of the page.

    1. Please check if the option TLS 1.2 is enabled.

You can go to Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> make sure the following options are ticked. If not, please enable it, and then restart your computer.

    1. I suggest you repair OneNote 2016 and check again.

Go to Windows Settings> "Apps & features" (or Apps> Installed apps)> type "OneNote" in the search bar. Check if you can see OneNote 2016. If you have multiple OneNote applications installed, please note that OneNote 2016 and OneNote for Windows 10 are two different apps.

If you can see OneNote 2016, please click on the three dots, Modify, Repair, and choose Online Repair.

If you don't see OneNote 2016, it is included in the Office suite, you need to repair the Office suite. Find and click on the Office suite, click on the three dots, Modify, Repair, and choose Online Repair.

    1. I suggest you try the following steps and check again.

    a. Sign out of your account from OneNote and close OneNote.

    b. Open File Explorer, copy/paste the following path in File Explorer and press Enter. If you can go to the following path, please delete all files and folders in these locations.

      %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy

       %localappdata%/Microsoft/OneAuth

       %localappdata%/Microsoft/IdentityCache

    c. In the Windows search bar, search for "Access Work or School" (Windows settings> Accounts> Access work or school). Check if you can see your business account in "Access Work or School".

    • If you don't see it, please select Connect and add your business account.
    • If you can see it, please select it and select Disconnect. After that, please click "Connect" and log into your account again to register the device.

    d. Run OneNote, sign into your business account, and try to open your notebooks again.

    1. Check your network, firewall, etc.

I suggest you connect to another network and check again.

I wonder if you have enabled the proxy or VPN on your device. You can search for "Proxy settings" and "VPN settings" in the Windows search bar, then check these Windows settings. If they are enabled, please disable them, and then check again.

Also, you can temporarily disable Firewall, Antivirus, and the 3rd part antivirus on your device. After that, please check again.

If the above suggestions don't help, I would like to gather more information.

    1. Please provide a full screenshot of the error message. You can upload the screenshot via "Insert Image".

  2. Does the problem occur when signing into your personal account (such as Outlook.com) and opening a personal notebook? This can help us to troubleshoot whether the problem is caused by your business account.
  3. I would like to know your Windows version. Are you using Windows 10 or Windows 11?

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

George | Microsoft Community Moderator

Hello George, thanks for all the different suggestions. I've started working thru' them, However one of the steps seems to have created a bigger issue - the Office suite online repair seems to have failed part way through. With the error message as per pic

As a result it seems that my whole Officesuite set of programms has been uninstalled but can't be reinstalled, so that I'm now going to have to do that manually!
