I have population data for a state that displays a nice filled map for that state by zip code but when I set it up to display by county, it shows me a map of the entire world. The legend and category ranges are correct on the county map. Any ideas to get it to show the state only?

Hi, AndyAlt

Thank you for using Microsoft products and posting them in the community.

When creating a populated map in Excel, if you display by county but the whole world appears, you can try the following to solve the problem:

  1. Check the data format: Make sure the county and state names are combined. For example, use the “County, State” format. This will help Excel recognize geographic locations more accurately.
  2. Use geographic data types: Make sure your county data is recognized as a geographic data type. Select the county name column and convert it to a geographic data type.
  3. Update Excel: Make sure you are using the latest version of Excel, as newer versions may contain fixes or improvements to geographic recognition.
  4. Manually filter the data:

If the above methods do not work, you can manually filter the data to keep only the county data for that state and then recreate the map.

I hope the above information can help you. Feel free to send a message if you need further help.

Best wishes
