OneNote cannot sync sections. Error message: OneNote can't sync your notes right now. We'll keep trying. (Error code: 0xE00009C8 bb0ur)

Problem description

  • I have a huge size notebook in OneNote, shared with a couple of other accounts
  • Recently I found the notebook cannot sync any changes for sections. It means I cannot successfully create or delete sections, but I can sync pages within the existing sections, which is weird

What I have tried (all methods cannot solve the problem)

  • Use different devices, Windows and Macbook
  • Sign out and sign in back to the account
  • Manually sync the notebook
  • Update the OneNote app version
  • Clear all cache and sync the notebook again (this causes all sections to disappear)

What works

  • Use OneNote for Windows 10 app instead
  • So the notebook itself should be fine since this app is a cloud version without much local cache, and the problem should be within the local sync
  • But I want to fix the problem, and use the original OneNote app instead

Info

  • The OneNote version I am using: Microsoft® OneNote® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2409 Build 16.0.18025.20160) 64-bit
  • Error message: OneNote can't sync your notes right now. We'll keep trying. (Error code: 0xE00009C8 bb0ur)

    Thank you for your reply.

If you are referring to how to check if the synchronization of OneNote is working properly, the easiest way is to check if the content of the notes on the web side of OneNote is the same as the local one.

    Sign in to OneNote

If the data on the web side of OnNote is the same as the local notebook, the synchronization is working properly.

Regarding the export of notebooks, in the OneNote app you can select the partition and then right click and select export.

May I ask if you can't export even if you only export a single partition?

If you can browse OneNote's data, you can also manually copy to and paste into other notebooks or other note taking tools for backup.

    Hi Carlos,

How to understand the notebook works correctly from OneNote for Windows 10?

By the way, how can I export and migrate a huge-sized notebook to a new one? It appears to be stuck for a long time and no response.

    Thanks.

Hello G_ANA,  Welcome to the Microsoft community. It is not currently possible to confirm whether data corruption is triggering this issue, and usually creating a new notebook may resolve the issue.I would recommend that you create a new notebook, then copy a portion of the notes that are not synchronizing to the new notebook, and then share that notebook to see if the same issue occurs. If there is no problem with the new notebook, I would recommend that you transfer the contents of the old notebook to the new one and use the new one afterward.SincerelyCarlos - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialisto
