Against the official documentation we can not reference distribution list inside People or Group SharePoint field

Question

We have office 365 tenant, and we have distribution lists >> now when we create a People or Group SharePoint column inside a custom list and we define to allow selection of user and groups as follow:-

we are able to reference users and SharePoint Groups inside this column , but we can not reference distribution lists. although inside this official documentation @ https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/list-and-library-column-types-and-options-0d8ddb7b-7dc7-414d-a283-ee9dca891df7 the People or Group field should allow us to reference distribution lists:-

Include or exclude groups of people Specify whether the list includes only individual people, or additionally includes e-mail distribution lists and SharePoint groups.

any advice?

Per my test and research, we cannot use distribution groups as securable objects in SharePoint.

Currently, we suggest you upgrade distribution lists to Microsoft 365 Groups.
