Hi everyone,

I’m looking to migrate a domain from one Office 365 tenant to another and would love to get some insights on the step-by-step process involved.

Could anyone share detailed instructions or best practices for successfully completing this migration? Additionally, are there common pitfalls or challenges I should be aware of to ensure a smooth transition?

Any tips, resources, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Christinus Alexander

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to assist you.

Based on the description, I understand that you would like to migrate a custom domain from one M365 tenant to another M365 tenant.

Please kindly refer to the following steps.

    1. Before migration, please make sure to all data associated with the domain is backed up. This includes emails, files, and any important data.
    2. Remove domain dependencies in tenant A: email address, user accounts, and etc. (You can change the email address/username to the default onmicrosoft.com domain)
    3. Remove domain from tenant A: Admin Center - Settings - Domains, select the domain and remove. Ref: Remove a domain - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn
    4. Add domain in tenant B: Admin Center - Settings - Domains, Add domain and follow the domain wizard to complete the domain verification process. Ref: Add a domain to Microsoft 365 - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn
    5. Recreate the users/email addresses in tenant B using the custom domain and assign licenses. Ref: Assign or unassign licenses for users in the Microsoft 365 admin center - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn
    6. Update the DNS records at your domain registrar to point to Tenant B's services. Ref: Add DNS records to connect your domain - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn
    7. Post migration, you may verify the services are working with the domain in tenant B (Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, and etc.)

Since DNS records take time to propagate, it is highly recommended to perform a domain migration during weekends. So, there will be minimum impact on your organization's daily work.

Please feel free to reply to me if you have any questions. I will be happy to assist you further.

    Sincerely,

    Roger Shen

    Hello,

I have purchased a microsoft 365 business account. Previously I had another one with my partner. I also own a domain which was added and verified in the previous one. I and my partner parted ways in the business. He is not removing the domain from his account. In my new account, I cannot add and verify my domain. The ownership of the domain can be verified. I have posted this problem in my admin help and support. The help is coming very slowly. This is a desperate and urgent need.

    Thank you.
