SharePoint - view not sorting correctly

I have a SharePoint document library with a custom column called Year Mth (single line of text)

Users tag files with the Year mth eg "2024 05", "2023 05" etc (there is not a specific day, only month so could not use date/time)

I want to create a view that groups by the column Year Mth with the lastest at the top eg 2024 05 however even though I have selected this it does not apply it. I have to physically select the column and apply Z to A

View settings

Results in document library

When choose the view I see oldest to newest, when I click the custom column it shows as ZtoA but this has not actually been applied, if I manually select ZtoA again it does apply.

I have relooked at this and I think I have solved it but may need more testing.

The options selected under group override the options chosen in Sort.

Once I changed the the option descending (Year is a text field due to some users putting Year / Mth) under the group section it has worked

In conclusion I think the Sort options are ignored if Group functionality is used.

I do need to do some more testing on what happens if other fields are selected under Sort (eg not Year but say last modified etc) however this achieves what my users wanted.
