Excel doesn't sort as expected

I opened a new blank Excel file, and in cells A1, A2 and A3 entered the three-character strings Aug, Feb and Dec respectively. Then I tried to sort them in ascending alphabetical order and obtained: Aug, Dec, Feb, which is neither alphabetical order nor "Earliest months first". What is the explanation for this?
