When pasting screenshots from windows keyboard into OneNote some of them are randomly much smaller than the others. I have been facing this issue only for the past few weeks. This did not happen on 16.0.17928.20156 . Is there any solution for this?

In the below example one can see that images 1) & 4) are significantly smaller than 2) & 3). This seems to happen at random

    Dear S _010

    Thanks for your response.

    a) Do you think clearing the OneNote & MSOffice cache would be worth a shot?

    This is indeed a method that you can try to reset Office through the registry.

    • Exit all Office programs.
    • Press Windows key + R at the same time, enter regedit, and press Enter;
    • Locate the following key values in sequence and rename the Office folder (right-click it and select Rename, for example, rename Office to Officeold);
           HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

    Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, clickHow to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Supportto view the article.

    b) Will I lose my notebooks if I clear the OneNote& MSOffice cache? My notebooks are synced with OneDrive

    This will not happen. The data is synchronized with OneDrive and the notes will be synchronized from OneDrive again.

    c) Would reinstalling MSOffice be a better idea?

    Alternatively, you can uninstall and reinstall the computer to see if the problem can be fixed without deleting the cache. If you use Outlook, you need to back up your Outlook data first.

    d) Could you think of any other sources that might be at the heart of the problem? The windows clipboard (I use wind+v when pasting multiple images)? The screenshot tool?

    You can try to use the mouse to select an image on the web page, right-click and click [Copy], and then use the mouse to paste.

    e) This error started sometime in September. Previously I would simply rollback to a previous restore point and it would resolve. However, after a certain windows update this method stopped working as well

    In addition to OneNote, does this problem occur when pasting in Word or PowerPoint? We cannot rule out whether it is related to version compatibility.

    Therefore, it seems that the problem also exists in the old version. You can uninstall and reinstall first to see the situation after reinstallation. If the problem still exists, you can try to perform a clean boot and create a new local account in the computer to check for third-party interference and account configuration files.

    Clean boot:

    • Which starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It can be used to determine whether a background service or program is interfering or causing a problem.
    • These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step.
    • How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

    Create a new local account:

    • This operation is to use a new account configuration file. If the account configuration file is damaged, it will also cause some problems in system use. You can follow the official Microsoft documentation to operate.

    You can troubleshoot according to the above solutions. If the problem still exists, you can reply at any time to share the latest progress with us.

    Hi,
    I am exasperated. The downgrade didn't solve the issue unfortunately. Maybe it is not version dependent.

    Dear S _010

    Thanks for your response.

    1. You don't need to create a restore point before rolling back the version. This will only return the app version to the old version and affect the data synchronized in your app. You can check whether the OneNote notes have been synchronized to OneDrive. If they have been synchronized, then after you install the old version and log in to the account, the original data will be synchronized.
    2. Sorry, we can't query about the function, but this version is an update launched in September this year. In fact, although it is a historical version, it is not a very old version, and there is no difference in function.
    3. Are the two photos pasted front and back? There is indeed a big difference in size, but unfortunately, we tested this on version 18025.20072, and pasting is normal, so we recommend that you roll back the version to check the situation first. If the problem still exists, you need to check whether there is interference from a third party.

    I hope the above information is helpful. If you need further assistance, please feel free to reply.

    Hi! Thanks for helping.

    a) Can down grading cause errors? Should I make a system restore point before doing so? I am using an office 2021 subscription that came with my laptop. I assume that using office 2021 has no impact on the solution you have provided. Is that correct?

    b) Is there a way to check whether the version I am downgrading to has the following option -

    c) I have another example. Here both images are the same image pasted twice (image size 1578x176; 39.7kb)

    Dear S _010

    Thanks for raising your concerns in Microsoft Community.

    We understand that you are encountering the problem of abnormal size of pasted pictures in OneNote.

    According to the screenshots you attached, you can indeed intuitively see the size difference between the pictures.

    However, since you mentioned that this did not happen in the historical version, we do not rule out that the problem is related to the version.

    We can try to roll back the Office version to 16.0.17928.20156 or earlier, and suspend the update to see if it can return to normal.

    1. Close all Office software, search for [Command Prompt] (or "cmd") in the [Start Menu], and right-click the mouse and select [Run as administrator];
    2. In the command prompt enter the following code and then press Enter;
       cd %programfiles% \Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun

    3. And then enter:
       Officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.17928.20156

    Once the installation is successful, go to File - Account - Update Options - Pause Updates.

    Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps (listed by date) - Office release notes | Microsoft Learn

    You can then paste the image in OneNote again to see how it appears. The suspension of updates is temporary. You can wait for a while until a new version is released, then try to update again and check the pasting status in OneNote.

    I hope the above information is helpful. If you need further assistance, please feel free to reply.
