Cannot rename a file on SharePoint

My organization recently moved to SharePoint.

We have setup a "temaplate" folder structure with sub folders. The idea that the team use this "template" when setting up a new customer folder structure which will contain the same subfolders, template documents etc.

When we copy this folder structure, then try to rename it we get an error that states you do not have access and must ask the owner to rename.

Similiar behavior occurs when we copy files. If I copy a file that I created locally and then try to rename it in sharepoint it will not let me rename and states I must contact the file owner.

This also messes up my sync and I receive an error that states the file is read only and I need to be given permission to edit it. This only occurs on rename. I am also unable to delete the file.

I am certain this is a permissions issue

    Dear rjrVA,

Good day! Thank you for posting in our community. Your question is "Cannot rename a file on SharePoint".

The issue you're experiencing with renaming files and folders on SharePoint is indeed likely related to permissions. When copying folders into SharePoint, permissions from the source location might not always be inherited correctly, or there may be existing restrictions set by your organization that prevent certain actions. Here's how you can troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

    1. Kindly let us know if you performed the renaming from SharePoint Online, instead of synced folder. If not, please open SharePoint folder from web browser and check the result.

    2) Verify Permissions:

    1. Go to the SharePoint document library where your files and folders are located.
    2. Select the folder or file you’re having trouble with.
    3. Click on the i (information) icon on the right-hand side to open the detailspane.
    4. Scroll down to the Has access section to see who has access to the item.
    5. Ensure you have at least Edit permissions. If not, you’ll need to request the appropriate access from the SharePoint admin.
    1. Check Folder and File Permissions: Please contact site admin to help check your permission and adjust it if necessary.

Go to the document library or root folder >> click settings icon >> library settings >> >> permissions for this library (for root folder, right click the root folder >> manage access >> 3 dots >> advanced) >> check permissions >> make sure you have at least "Edit" permission on the library and root folder.

If not, please click "grant permission" to assign permission to you.

    Alternative Workarounds

    • Rename Files Locally:
      • As a temporary workaround, you could try renaming files locally before uploading them to SharePoint. However, this doesn’t resolve the root issue.
    • Consult with Your SharePoint Administrator
      • SharePoint admin has more control over user permissions and have access to more tools for further issue checking. Please consult with them to ensure that there is no additional policies block users to rename files and folders as needed.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a nice day!

    Best Regards,
