    Dear John Stutz,

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

To better troubleshoot the error, can you tell me if your other Office software currently opens it? Can you send me a screenshot of the error page? There are different solutions for different error messages. In the meantime you can try the following steps.

    1.Registry Reset Office

Press Windows + R and type regeditin the Open Run box and press Enter.

Locate the following key and rename the Office folder (right-click it and select Rename (for example, Officewill be renamedOfficeold)):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

Then open the word document again to try the effect.

    2.Add Office permissions

Press Windows + R and type regeditin the Open Run box and press Enter.

    Locate the following keys:

    HKEY_USERS

    Locate folder S-1-5-20.

    1. Right-click S-1-5-20 and select Permissions.
    2. Select Add.
    3. Enter everyone, select Check Names, and then select OK.

Select Allow from the Full Control option.

Disclaimer: Registry or workgroup modifications are typically intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT professionals and can help resolve some issues, but incorrect modification of the registry can lead to serious problems. So, make sure to follow the steps below strictly. For added protection, back up the registry before modifying it. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, see: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support

If none of these steps work, you may need to reinstall Microsoft 365. You can find and download office products on Microsoft account | Sign In or Create Your Account Today – Microsoft  under "Services & Subscriptions".

The information you share helps us solve problems faster. Thank you for your support and understanding and we look forward to hearing from you.

    Best Regards,
