Onedrive - Half Bake Software

My work laptop shows that several folders have the Red Circle with White Cross though I can open the files with no problem. But they are an eye sore.

  • So I reset Onedrive. Restart PC. No avail.
  • I uninstall Onedrive, reinstall. Allow Onedrive to finish processing changes. Restart PC. No avail too. Yet after this step, it became a bigger problem as all Office files became Read Only, thus I cannot edit those via desktop.
  • I repair the Microsoft Office, online method. Restart PC. No avail to the Read Only problem.

At this point it is much faster to just format and reinstall Windows 11.

So weird that OneDrive doesn't keep a log why certain folders aren't syncing or user accessible and readable log.

    Hi! HenryWijaya2,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community! I realize that you've encountered a problem with red circle and white cross appear in the bottom right corner of the OneDrive icon and I understand how you feel.May I ask if you have encountered this icon?

This icon above means that your current OneDrive is in an unsynchronizable state, and normally, resetting OneDrive would fix it. However, I noticed that you've already tried resetting and reinstalling OneDrive, so your issue may be related to your current Windows system. For now I would suggest you try creating a new Windows Local Administrator account and in the new account try to turn on OneDrive and configure it and see if the problem appears in the new account: Add a local user account 1.Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Family & other users. (In some versions of Windows you'll see Other users.)

2.Under Add other user , select Add account

3.select the option Add a user without a Microsoft account. (Enter the account information for this person to sign in) 4.Follow the instructions to finish setting up the accountConfigure a user as an administrator 1.Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Family & other users. (In some versions of Windows you'll see Other users.)

2.Under Other users, select the flyout for the account you want to change

3.Next to Account options, select Change account type 4.From the dropdown, select the account type and then select OKPlease Visit Manage user accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support for more details.I understand that the above methods may be cumbersome for you. Although they may not solve your problem immediately, but they can help us get closer to the root cause of the problem and serve as a reference for whether we need to take the next step. Therefore, I sincerely invite you to try the above methods and provide me with the results in the form of a reply, so that I can provide you with more appropriate help according to the actual situation.Thank you for your understanding and patience and I look forward to hearing from you. Hi! HenryWijaya2,

Thank you for providing a response! I'm glad that your problem is not present in the new account.Based on the current situation, your problem should be caused by an anomaly in the old Windows account profile. For the time being, I would recommend that you use the new Windows account as your primary account. If you want to migrate some of the settings from your old account to your new account, you can migrate the account data in the following ways(migrating data can help you set up the new account faster, but not all data can be migrated perfectly, thank you for your understanding!) :1. Please press Win+E to open Explorer.2. Please locate the current path to C:\ Users, where you will see your old account folder, please click to enter the old account folder.3. Click View > Show > Hidden items in the upper toolbar.

    Image

    1. Please click Ctrl+A to select all the files, then go back to C:\ Users, click your new account folder, press Ctrl+V in the keyboard to copy all the contents of the old account to the new account (during the copying process, if you encounter the Replace or skip Files prompt box, please select Skip this File).

Once you have done this, some of the personalization settings and other data from your old account will take effect in your new account.  I am glad I was able to help, Please feel free to mark Yes or No above that contained the solution to make it easier for other customers to find the solution more quickly.Feel free to post if you need further help.Thank you for your understanding and patience and I look forward to hearing from you.Best RegardsEddy | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. It is this icon.

Using another account the problem goes away.

So what should I do now if I insist in using the old account? At least now I know I don't need to format the laptop.

    Henry
