Hello,
Is it possible to use a shared mailbox for SMTP AUTH (Scan-to-Email) or does it need to be a regular user mailbox with 1 exchange online license?

A shared mailbox's account is disabled, so not possible. It needs to be licensed as a regular mailbox.

Now, Having said that. If you were to use a different authenticated, licensed account that has SEND AS rights to that shared mailbox, that should work in theory.
