I have a 365 subscription- I need to downgrade as I have retired. If I switch to the basic subscription will I still be signed into my accounts on apps. If not, how will I sign in and find my files? I do not need storage or AI- I just use ppt and Word and ocaasionally Eexcel

You might consider buying Office 2024 with Outlook or without Outlook. They are a one-time purchases with no on-going subscription fee.

There is no "downgrade" option other than this to reduce the annual fee https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/switching-to-microsoft-365-personal-and-family-classic-plans-58342e83-38e7-4cda-b63b-88604a8fb7ef

And you can change o365 Fam to o365 Pers

(You have to buy an o365 Pers sub, and you associate it with the MS Account used with o365 Fam, any credit will increase the sub period)

o365 Basic only includes 100gb OneDrive, it doesnt include any components
