You have to add some text in a paragraph for the Drop Cap command to become activated.

    Hello.Brittani Stroschein

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

I would be honoured to help check your question.

Before I answer your question, you need to give me some information so I can better pinpoint your problem.

Do you use office software for personal account or business or school account?

Because the solution to the problem is completely different for different accounts, I hope you can tell me clearly.

I can only offer some basic methods of personal now that can help you with further troubleshooting.

    1. Check Cursor Position If the cursor is not placed at the beginning of the paragraph or the paragraph is not selected, this feature will be unavailable. Place the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph where you want to set the drop cap. Ensure there is text in the paragraph. Try using the "Drop Cap" feature again. If the text is in a text box or table, the "Drop Cap" feature is unavailable. Copy the text from the text box or table to the main body of the document.
    2. Document in Compatibility Mode If the document was saved from an older version of Word (e.g., Word 97-2003), it might be in compatibility mode, which restricts some features. Click "File" > "Info" > "Convert". Convert the document to the latest Word format (.docx). After conversion, try using the "Drop Cap" feature again.
    3. Document in Protected Mode If the document is protected (e.g., read-only mode or restricted editing), some features will be disabled. Click "File" > "Info" > "Protect Document". Check if "Restrict Editing" or "Read-Only" mode is enabled. If so, click "Stop Protection" and enter the password (if any). After unprotecting, try using the "Drop Cap" feature again.
    4. Repair Word The settings file for Word might be corrupted, causing the feature to malfunction. Right-click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner, then select "Apps and Features" from the pop-up menu. Find the Microsoft Office product in the list, select it, and click "Modify". Depending on your Office installation type (Click-to-Run or MSI-based), you will see the following options:
      • Click-to-Run: Select "Online Repair" > "Repair" to ensure everything gets fixed. You can also choose "Quick Repair", which runs faster but only detects and replaces corrupted files.
      • MSI-based: Select "Repair", then click "Continue".
    5. Disable COM Add-ins Sometimes add-ins interfere with normal operations. You can try disabling all add-ins and then enabling them one by one to identify the problem. Open Excel, click "File" > "Options" > "Add-ins". In the "Manage" drop-down menu, select "COM Add-ins", then click "Go". Uncheck all add-ins, click "OK", and then restart Excel.
    6. Safe Mode for Word Launch Command Prompt: Press Win + R to open the "Run" dialog box. Type cmd and press Enter. Enter the following command: For Word: winword /safe

If you get any feedback on the above methods, please let me know by posting a comment so that I can better help you solve the problem.

    Best regards.
