Copilot Pro on Personal Microsoft 365 - Can’t Edit PowerPoint or Excel Files, Only Gives Advice

I have a personal Microsoft 365 subscription with Copilot Pro on my personal laptop (not work-managed). However, in PowerPoint and Excel, Copilot only gives advice like "I can’t directly make changes to your file."

This happens even with files saved in OneDrive Personal, not just local files. My Office apps are fully up to date.

Is this a known issue? How can I enable Copilot’s direct editing features in PowerPoint and Excel?

    Thanks for the reply!

I have seen multuple LinkedIn Learning trainings that demonstrate Copilot Pro making changes to powerpoint and word files. Can you please explain how come?

One common example is the ask "Make all headings bold" which works perfectly in those trainings, and not for me.

And a follow up ask - it seems Copilot is unable to access the data in the my excel files and advise upon it. "I don't have the capability to access or view your Excel file directly" . Is this also by design, or is it a mistake?

    Hi, Gergana Natcheva

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

According to your description, you are using Copilot Pro in your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, and you are finding that it can only provide suggestions in PowerPoint and Excel and not directly edit files. This is actually by design.

Copilot Pro currently only supports creating content in PowerPoint and Excel, not directly modifying existing files. This is to ensure full user control and editorial accuracy Copilot can help you generate new content, provide suggestions, and analyze data, but the final editing and modifications must be done manually by the user.

Thank you for your understanding and support. We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!
