The user had view permission on the subfolder. If I give edit permission on the parent folder, will the user's permission on the subfolder be changed to edit as well?

    Dear Customer,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

I'm sorry you have a problem, but based on your description, we can work together to solve it. As per your description, I understand that you want togive user edit permission on a parent folder, but you want to restrict that user to edit a specific subfolder.

As per your description, firstly please allow me to explain if you give edit permission on a parent folder the user's permission on all the subfolders under this parent folder will be changed to edit as well. But you can set the subfolders permission in “View or Read mood” again after you change the parent folder permissions to restrict the user to edit that specific subfolder. To do so, you can try some steps below:

Step 1: Go to the SharePoint Site> Documents Library> Parent folder> select the sub folder> click on “...”> manage access> click on”...” > Advance settings> on permission tab > stop inheriting permissions

Step 2: Go to the SharePoint Site> Documents Library> Parent folder> select the sub folder> click on “...”> manage access> click on”...” > Advance settings> on permission tab >select all the users you don’t want to edit> Remove user permission

**Step 3:**Go to the SharePoint Site> Documents Library> Parent folder> select the sub folder> click on “...”> manage access> Advance settings> on permission tab > Grant permission> Add user > show option> select Read> Share

I hope these steps will help you to solve this issue. If there are any issues in the future, feel free to post to this community again. I am here to help you.

Have a great day and stay safe!

    Best Regards,

    Sophia
