PowerPoint graphs do not update based on changes made in Excel via SharePoint (Office 365)

I have had a continuing problem where PowerPoint graphs do not update when I make changes to the originals in Excel when using Office 365 via files in SharePoint.

The feature works fine when files are stored locally on my computer, but it never reliably works when working on SharePoint. The refresh data button used to give me errors, but now it just gives me false positives, telling me the graph is updated when it is in fact not.

The few times it has worked, it immediately breaks if any of the files are opened through desktop applications and saved which is incredibly annoying since I am not the only one working on these files and office 365 apps are hard to work with compared to the desktop applications with more features and more user friendly experience.

I can't even link objects to other files on SharePoint, the option is greyed out and inaccessible. This means I have to constantly delete and re-copy paste all objects and graphs on a presentation with over 10+ objects I have to replace very week.

Is there some workaround to this?
