Excel files that cannot be opened

An Excel file, shared by a friend, does not open properly after an Office upgrade and suggests that the extension does not match the file format. All other files are fine. Any suggestions?

    Hi Sarah Rogers2

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I realize that you've encountered a problem with " Excel files that cannot be opened ", and I understand how you feel. Don't worry, I'll do my best to help you.

Before I help you, I would like to confirm some questions for you. What version of Excel does your friend have? What is the extension of the Excel file he shared with you? Is it .xls or .xlsx? What version of Office was you using before the upgrade, and which version did you upgrade to? These clues may be the key to solving your problem. If possible, I hope you can provide an error picture of the file that cannot be opened normally, which will help me better help you.

    Looking forward to your reply!

Wishing you a joyous Christmas and may the new year bring you new opportunities and hope!

    Best regards
