I used backup drive to copy my desktop folders including Word, Excel, PPT files and then transferred them to the local user drive on a new computer. When I'm in the local drive, it shows the size of the specific files, but when I try to open them, I get an error. I need a fix! I basically have no function of my work files.

Hello KimRondina,   Welcome to the Microsoft Community. I understand that you encountered this error after copying files to another computer. Based on the error message and the fact that you mentioned copying the entire "Desktop" folder, it seems there might have been issues during the copying process that caused problems with the file paths.

Since we can only confirm the issue based on your description, I would like to clarify a few more details about the copying operation:

    • What device are you referring to as the "backup drive"? Is it a removable storage device like a USB drive or an external hard drive, or some other type of storage?
    • How did you copy this folder to your new computer? Did you directly copy and paste the Desktop folder?
    • Before you copied this folder, were the files inside it able to run normally on your old computer?

Confirming this information will help me better understand your current situation and provide you with more accurate suggestions. Looking forward to your reply! Best RegardsEliac | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
