Fix issue with dropdown choice boxes drastically slowing down excel file performance?

In a file with about 10 worksheets and 80-100 rows each, I added a dropdown field that looks up some values in a sheet added for that purpose. Why does this so affect excel's performance to the point of unusability? And how do I speed things up? Is using data validation option a more efficient way of adding choice boxes to excel?
