Selected shape not attached to pointer when dragging

Dear MS customer care,
In MS Visio (Pro 2019) Its just started that when I select an object to move it by dragging, the object moves to a position away from the mouse pointer and is held at this distance wherever the pointer moves. Its difficult to explain, but with an item selected, as soon as I move the mouse, the item is held at a position about 3" to the right and about 1.5" higher than where the mouse pointer is, staying in that location related to the pointer.

It only happens on Visio and no other programs.

Also checked and its the same using laptop trackpad so its not the mouse.

Please help with what's happened and how to correct this.

Same problem here.

However, when using Visio with only a laptop and not multiple monitors, it works as it should whether you use a Bluetooth mouse or the mouse pad.

When I connect multiple monitors is when the issue occurs.

Steps taken so far.

  • removed docking station and plugged one monitor into the laptop's HDMI port - same issue.
  • connected a different monitor to the laptop's HDMI port - same issue.
  • disconnected my Bluetooth mouse and used the mouse pad - same issue.
  • tried all of JonP-Exeon suggestions except 4. as I have no way to do that.

Version 2501 (Build 18429.20158 Click-to-Run)

Dell Latitude 7430

Windows 11 system

UPDATE - found the solution on a forum - Can't drag and drop objects in Visio Pro 2021

  • Find the "Visio" shortcut (use "All" for list of apps in Windows 11 or "Start" menu in Windows 10
  • Right-click and select "Go to file location" from the context menu
  • Right-click on Visio shortcut and select "Properties" from the context menu
  • In "Properties", select "Compatibility" tab
  • Towards the bottom, select "Change high DPI settings"
  • From there, check the "Override high DPI scaling behavior"
  • Select "Ok" and then "Ok" to close properties
  • Restart Visio

    Hello James Smith__Smitty

Thanks very much for your note above. Like you I was working through all the options but nothing had worked. A clean install of Visio seemed to rectify the issue short term but it quickly came back again. However, your UPDATE above has solved the issue. :)

    Thanks again

    Jon

    Hi JonP-Exeon,

    Good day to you!

I hope you are doing well. Thanks for reaching out to our Microsoft Community Forum. We will be happy to help you.

I understand the inconvenience you are experiencing. Since we are communicating in the community, I am not able to check your environment directly. Therefore, I would like to gather more information for initial troubleshooting. You can share the results/information with us, which will help us narrow down the problem.

    1. I would like to know if this is happening in a specific Visio file or all Visio files. You can test this by opening another Visio file or creating a blank new file.
    2. I suggest you run Visio in Safe Mode. See if the problem still occurs

Close Visio first. Press Win + R, in the Run box, type visio /safe and click OK. Open the Visio file and check again.

    1. I suggest you set Windows into Clean boot and disable all startup items, then check again. This can help us to troubleshoot if this is caused by the startup items in Windows.
    2. For testing purposes, I recommend you switch to another Windows user profile (if you don’t have another Windows user profile, please try the steps in the "Switch user" section and sign into another account), then run Visio and check again. This can help us to troubleshoot whether the issue is caused by the local environment in your original Windows user profile.
    3. Please provide your Visio version.

You can go to File> Account and check the version next to the About Visio button.

When you have any updates, please feel free and come back to share them with us. 😊

    Sincerely,

    George| Microsoft Community Moderator
