Hi,

Is the Storage Migration Service tool in Admin Center able to:

  • migrate data from a failover cluster to a Storage Replica cluster?
  • migrate only a subset of the data / shares to a target location (ie if we want to move some to cluster A and some to cluster B from the same source)
  • just move the data and associated shares to the target location (without messing around with changing hostnames / IPs etc..?

Asking in order to see if this tool will help an upcoming FileShare migration project.

cheers
Adrian

    Hi,

migrate data from a failover cluster to a Storage Replica cluster?
Storage Migration Service (SMS) is able to migrate:

    - A source server or failover cluster to migrate files and data from
    - A destination server running Windows Server 2019 (clustered or standalone) to migrate to. Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 R2 work as well but are around 50% slower

migrate only a subset of the data / shares to a target location (ie if we want to move some to cluster A and some to cluster B from the same source)
After performing the inventory of data on the source server, you can select what you want to migrate.

just move the data and associated shares to the target location (without messing around with changing hostnames / IPs etc..?
As far as I know this should be possible, as Storage Migration Service is done in three different steps and the cutover step is the last which changes the IP address and hostname. So basically you can just perform the inventory (1st step), and then the transfer (2nd step), and leave it after that.

    Best regards,
    Leon
