Error message when moving section from one notebook to another.

I use OneNote to record information about training I deliver (one section per course). As the course is completed, I archive it into another note book. I get the following message at least 80% of the time (in fact I'm usually surprised if I *do* manage to move it! ).

I have synced the notebooks (many times!) I am signed in. This is the message I get. I have tried logging out of OneNote, logging back in again etc.

A usual workaround is to copy the pages (multi selection possible).

Reinstalling Office is very unlikely to resolve this - this does not affect the notebook cache or sync state.

Please be cautious deleting your cache: if you have any unsynced changes, these only live in the local cache. If you close all notebooks and delete the cache, this data will be permanently deleted unless you have a backup.

I do apologize as we are aware that the error message is lacking information and can be improved.

Can you go into File --> Options --> Sync, and check Download all files and images? It's possible that some images haven't been downloaded locally to save disk space. You will unfortunately need to navigate to each page one-by-one to get them to re-download.

As Bernd mentioned, a workaround is to copy each page one-by-one. I do apologize as I know this is cumbersome and we are looking to improve this in the future.

    Dear Anne Walsh (Anne),

    Thank you for reaching out.

I understand you're encountering an error when trying to move sections between notebooks in OneNote. To help resolve this, could you please try the following steps?

    Check Sync Status:

    • Click on File > Info, and next to the notebook, please select Sync Status.
    • Please take a screenshot and share it with us.

    Compare with OneNote Online:

    • If the sync status is fine, please check if the local version and the online version of the notebook match by accessing OneNote Online.

As a temporary workaround, you can try moving the section from OneNote Online. If you still see any sync errors in the OneNote app, please follow these steps to troubleshoot:

    Back Up Your Notes:

    • Open OneNote and go to File > Options > Save & Backup.
    • Set a backup folder location and click Back Up Now to ensure your data is safe.

    Close and Sign Out:

    • Close all notebooks one by one.
    • Sign out of all OneNote accounts.
    • Close the OneNote app completely.

    Clear Cache:

    • Navigate to %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\cache.
    • Delete all the contents in the cache folder.

    Reinstall OneNote (Office 365):

    • Uninstall Office 365 from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
    • Restart your computer and reinstall Office 365.

You can follow the below steps to reinstall office applications --- >> Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365, Office 2024

    Reopen the Notebook Properly:

    • Before signing in again, open your notebook from OneNote Online.
    • Click Edit in OneNote to open it in the desktop app.
    • Follow the prompts to sign in and allow full syncing to complete.

Please try these steps and let us know the outcome. If the issue persists, we can look into additional troubleshooting options.

Thank you for your time and patience, we hope you have a great day!

    Best Regards,
