I have a quite old server with Server 2012 Essential, can I virtualize it to a newer one (with it's own license) and use the same Windows Essential 2012 License in VM?

Thanks.
Claudio.

    Dear Claudio,

Thank you for reaching out. We understand you're considering virtualizing your existing Windows Server 2012 Essentials installation onto a newer host and would like to know if the original license can be reused in a virtual machine (VM).

Windows Server 2012 Essentials includes rights to be installed either on physical hardware or as a virtual instance—but not both simultaneously. If your original license was used on a physical server, and you now wish to virtualize it on a new host, you may do so only if:

The original physical installation is decommissioned

The new host has its own valid Windows Server license (e.g., Standard or Datacenter)

The Essentials license is transferred to the VM, subject to the terms of your original license agreement

Please note that OEM licenses (often pre-installed by hardware vendors) are typically non-transferable to new hardware. If your Essentials license was acquired through OEM, you may need to purchase a new license for the virtualized environment.

For full compliance, we recommend reviewing your license type (Retail, OEM, or Volume) and confirming transfer rights. You can also refer to Microsoft's Windows Server Licensing Guide for detailed virtualization scenarios.

    Best regards,
