App Manifest and what about the Registry?

I try to create a shell extension for Windows 10 and 11... they, say, that I need an "app manifest"... fine... but I've some questions and the first one is

IF I'm creating this manifest and register it (including a 'FileExplorerContextMenus' item and stuff like that), do I still have to create the registry entries for this shell extension or not?

is it "manifest OR registry" or is it "manifest AND registry" ??

and if it is "manifest OR registry", will we see a future in which we will have ONLY manifest and stuff like that of which you cannot find out what's installed on your machine? ...or, how do I find out what's really installed? ... or "how can I check, if my context menu handler IS correctly installed" ?? for debugging it would be nice to have some information...
