In the attack surface map in Microsoft Defender, the previous organization name is still displayed despite changing it in the admin organization settings. Where can the updated organization name be reflected to ensure consistency across the platform?

    Hi Caroline,

You're referring to two different identifiers:

In Microsoft Entra, the Tenant ID and Organization ID are the same. These terms are used interchangeably and refer to your Azure AD tenant's unique identifier.

In the Microsoft Defender portal, however, the Tenant ID and Organization ID are distinct. The Tenant ID remains the same as in Entra, but the Organization ID is a separate identifier used specifically within the security context.

    To view both:

    1. Go to https://security.microsoft.com
    2. Navigate to Settings > Microsoft Defender XDR > Account

    There, you'll find:

    • The Tenant ID (same as in Entra)
    • A unique Organization ID used by Defender

🔍 Note: The Organization ID shown in defender portal is the one that appears in attack map visualizations and other security-specific workflows.

    Hi Caroline,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A.

The issue where the organization name still appears as the previous name in Microsoft Defender's attack surface map even after changing it in the admin organization settings often occurs because the update to the organization name has not fully propagated across all Microsoft Defender services.

In Microsoft Entra ID, the organization name displayed across services is sourced from the tenant display name. Updating this display name in the Microsoft Entra admin center updates the organization's name but may take up to 24-48 hours to propagate and reflect across all Microsoft Defender views and products.

Please follow the steps below to ensure the updated organization name is reflected consistently:

Update Tenant Display Name in Microsoft Entra ID: Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as a global administrator. Go to Overview > Properties. Edit the Name field to your new organization name and save the change. Allow 24-48 hours for this change to propagate fully across Microsoft Defender services and other connected portals.

Clear Cache and Re-Login: Sign out and sign back into the Microsoft Defender portal. Clear browser cache or try using a different browser or private browsing mode to verify the update.

Verify Microsoft 365 Admin Organization Profile: Make sure that your organization profile details in the Microsoft 365 admin center are consistent and updated as this can impact organization name display.
