The search function doesn't work in conversations migrated from Skype, but should work in native conversations created in Teams.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a known issue, but there is no ETA on when this issue will be fixed.

"You are correct, the in-chat search does not work correctly in some migrated Skype chats. This is a known issue and we are working on fixing these chats. It's just there's a lot of Skype chats and the process continues to take some time. And unfortunately there is no immediate workaround available for the affected chats except to wait. Creating a new chat could be an option too, but I do understand this is not the best way if there's extensive chat history in the old chat."

    Hi,

Here’s what’s probably happening. Those date labels like June 13 don’t actually exist as searchable text in Teams. Turns out the system treats them more like decorative spacers between messages rather than real content you can query. So searching specifically for June 13 won’t pull up anything unless someone actually wrote that exact date in a message.

Important detail here. Even though you see June 13 separating messages in the chat timeline, that’s just visual formatting metadata. The actual message content doesn’t include those dates unless someone manually typed them out in their message body.

Now about the search problems people report. Sometimes Teams’ indexing gets laggy after certain actions happen. Clearing your local cache often triggers this, or switching between different organizational accounts in the app. Big message histories loading in can also throw off the search function temporarily.

End result? You wind up scrolling through weeks of chat manually because the search bar acts like those dates don’t exist. Happens more than you’d think with larger team channels especially.
