Hi everyone
We are working on a solution that currently uses OpenAI's Response API with GPT-5. We are planning to move to Azure for the added security and compliance capabilities.
While trying to deploy gpt-5 in the Azure AI Foundry I can't find how to deploy it with the Response API, I can only select ChatCompletions. We are using switzerlandnorth and according to this documentation it should be available: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-foundry/openai/how-to/responses?tabs=python-secure
I've also tried using other regions with no luck. I only see gpt-5-codex, computer-use and older o1 models for Responses. What am I missing?
Also: does anybody have a rough Idea when websearch will be available too?

You’re only seeing Chat Completions for GPT‑5 in Switzerland North because, while the Responses API is enabled in that region, GPT‑5 via Responses isn’t offered there yet. The portal filters by region × model × API, and currently GPT‑5/‑mini/‑nano/‑chat with Responses are primarily available in https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-foundry/openai/concepts/models?tabs=global-standard%2Cstandard-chat-completions#model-summary-table-and-region-availability. That’s why CH‑North shows GPT‑5 only under Chat Completions, while you may still see separate Responses entries like gpt‑5‑codex or computer‑use. To use GPT‑5 with Responses now, deploy in East US 2 or Sweden Central and ensure your subscription is approved for the gated
gpt-5reasoning SKU (mini/nano/chat are ungated). If you must stay in Switzerland North, use Responses with a model available there (e.g., GPT‑4.1 or GPT‑4o) or continue using Chat Completions for GPT‑5 until the pairing is added.Separately, web search isn’t supported in the Responses API yet and there’s no public ETA. If you need live web data now with enterprise guardrails, use Azure AI Agent Service – Grounding with Bing Search or build a custom tool that calls Bing Search/Azure AI Search and invoke it via function calling. Keep an eye on the Responses API feature list and What’s new for updates.

As a sanity check I just retried. I created the full stack of resources under Sweden Central, Ressource Group > Azure OpenAI > Azure AI Foundry. I still can't see GPT-5 with Responses.
I confirm the subscription I approved for the gated gpt-5 reasoning SKU.
Am I missing something? Do I need to deploy it as ChatCompletion than access it with a different endpoint?

There is no separate “Responses” deployment option for GPT‑5 in Azure AI Foundry the Azure OpenAI Responses API is a protocol layer, not a distinct deployment type. To use GPT‑5 with Responses, you must deploy GPT‑5 as a Chat Completions model in a supported region such as Sweden Central and then call it through the Responses API endpoint using the same deployment name. The portal only lists dedicated Responses entries for special-purpose models like
gpt-5-codexorcomputer-use, but GPT‑5 reasoning models share the Chat Completions deployment path. Make sure you select the correct standard deployment type (not provisioned unless you have explicit approval) and confirm your subscription is approved for the gatedgpt-5reasoning SKU.For reference, see the Model summary table and region availability.
Once deployed, you can invoke GPT‑5 via the Responses API without any extra configuration—simply use the
responses.create()method in your code and reference the Chat Completions deployment name. This works because the Responses API supports any compatible model deployment, even if the UI doesn’t show a separate Responses option for GPT‑5. If GPT‑5 still doesn’t appear in the model picker for Sweden Central, verify the Model summary table and region availability and confirm you’re using the correct region and deployment type. In short: deploy GPT‑5 as Chat Completions, then call it through the Responses API there’s no additional toggle or separate deployment required.Hope it helps!
