How do you use the WebAPI login?

I'm trying to learn how to setup WEB API authentication. Any articles would be helpful. I might be trying to do the wrong thing.

I would like to use Odata connections in Excel and have them refresh. I get errors when I do. I thought that it was permissions since the Excel app isn't logged in as anyone during the refresh.
