I'm curious about why you want to create a account in exchange online then create a "Remote" mailbox in on premise ? Why not create a exchange online mailbox directly? I'm curious about why you want to create a account in exchange online then create a "Remote" mailbox in on premise ? Why not create a exchange online mailbox directly?

We have centralized mail routing..
After creating exchange online mailbox over there, how Exchange onprem will understand about the new object created in the Online

When centralized mail transport is enabled, incoming Internet messages are routed as follows in a hybrid deployment:

An inbound message is sent from an Internet sender to the recipients who are located in Exchange Online.

Because the exchange online recipients have contoso.com (on-premise) email addresses, and the MX record for contoso.com points to EOP, the message is delivered to EOP and scanned for viruses.

Since centralized mail transport is enabled, EOP routes the messages for exchange online recipients to an on-premises Exchange server.

The on-premises Exchange server performs a lookup for exchange online recipients and determine the exchange online recipients are located in the Exchange Online organization.

The on-premises exchange server sent mails back to EOP.

EOP sends the message to Exchange Online.

Exchange Online delivers the message to recipients' mailboxes. For more details: centralized mail routing

You don' t need to configure anything since all transport settings are automatically configured in your on-premises organization and in the EOP company included in your Exchange Online organization when you run HCW.

The user is already created in o365. I have created in onprem AD.

Do I need to create the user in onprem AD before issuing the command

Here are 2 methods for you to create an office 365 mailbox, one is creating Office 365 mailbox in Exchange Admin Center and another one is creating Office 365 mailbox for existing AD user.

If you have created an office 365 mailbox in EAC, step by step guidance for your reference: Create Office 365 mailbox in Exchange Admin Center

If you have created a user in AD, you could enable this account for an office 365 mailbox through running Enable-RemoteMailbox. Step by step guidance for your reference: Create Office 365 mailbox for existing AD user

For the command Enable-RemoteMailbox “user identity” -RemoteRoutingAddress “user@mathieu.company .mail.onmicrosoft.com, the -RemoteRoutingAddress parameter specifies user's unique SMTP address in Office 365. The routing address is stamped to user’s TargetAddress property on his Active Directory account. This instructs our on-prem Exchange to route messages addressed to userto Office 365.

Hi @JustinMicheal-7973 ,

If you have created a office 365 mailbox in on-prem EAC, you don't need create the same user in on-prem AD.

If you have created a AD account in on-prem AD, you need use the Enable-RemoteMailbox. here's an official explanation on RemoteRoutingAddress parameter, specifies the SMTP address of the mailbox in the service that this user is associated with.
