Is it actually possible to force a specific browser to be default in 2012R2?

We have a customer with a 2012 R2 RDS environment.
They want their default browser for all users to be Google Chrome.

  • I've tried to set default browser with a Default App associations xml file/group policy.
  • A test user with a new profile gets asked what browser they want to use upon first opening an http link or .html file.
  • I can't just modify this in the registry because it's protected against changing.
  • Further, even if the default app policy worked, I don't think it would affect existing user profiles?

Is this really basically impossible, or am I missing something?

Cheers

Paddy

    Hello Paddy,

You can use the Set a default associations configuration file Group Policy or the DefaultAssociationsConfiguration Mobile Device Management setting to set Microsoft Edge as the default browser for your organization.

The default file associations aren't applied if Microsoft Edge isn't installed on the target device. In this scenario, users are prompted to select their default application when they open a link or a htm/html file.

For better understanding look at the the article below,

OK, but I want to set Chrome as the default Browser and I have already set a default associations file and that doesn't work per my original post.

I assume Defualt Associations files being a computer policy means it's just the default for new profiles, although again, I'm having new user profiles just be asked what browser they wish to use.

    Cheers

    Paddy
