When I open Outlook under OneDrive (Microsoft 365) I am presented with a totally unrecognizable account name:

This has never been right. And I don't know how to correct it. Where do I specify my email account name, etc.?

Hello Jim,

This happens because Microsoft automatically generates an alias when an account is created without a custom email address, and unfortunately, you can’t change that primary name directly in Outlook or OneDrive. You can add a new alias (such as your preferred email address) and set it as your primary sign-in name by visiting Manage how you sign in to Microsoft. If you just want your emails to show the correct name, you can update your display name at Microsoft Account Profile. After making these changes, sign out and back in to sync everything.

I'm sorry, I went on a road trip right after I asked that question.

My preferred email address, ******@yahoo.com, appears to already be my primary sign-in name. In fact, I Don't have this problem anywhere else in the Microsoft system. Just on my web-based Outlook.

It's not anything urgent, because I rarely use that Outlook. Just thought it was strange.

Each personal Microsoft account also has an outlook.com e-mail address associated with it and that e-mail needs to use an alias, when a third-party e-mail address is the primary log-in to your Microsoft account. As suggested by Jay Mark Dullan, you can create an alias if you ever want to use outlook.com for sending e-mails.

"Third party" in this case being my @yahoo.com domain? And that's only true for outlook.com, not local outlook, right? I've had that email address since the 20th Century, and it was never a problem....

When you set up a Microsoft account using your @yahoo.com mail, from Microsoft's perspective, the yahoo address becomes your user name for the Microsoft service. However, all personal Microsoft accounts also get an associated outlook.com e-mail.

Obviously, to use the Microsoft mail service which is included with your Microsoft account, the e-mail address can't be identical to your existing yahoo e-mail account (because it must be possible to tell the e-mail addresses and their corresponding services apart). That is why you see the peculiar, automatically generated alias outlook_<sequence of characters>@outlook.com e-mail address. You can use it as an actual Microsoft e-mail if you add your own alias. But you don't have to. You could just ignore it.

P.S. In the context, "third-party" simply means "not provided by Microsoft."
