Disk manager does not format partition after creation

Using disk manager assistant to create and format a new partition results in a partition with drive letter but a "RAW" filesystem.

It is possible to format the partition by calling the format dialog from disk manager context menu.

If I delete the partition and create it again. It ends up again created, with drive letter but unformatted/RAW

    Hi ooLi,

I completely understand how confusing it can be when a newly created partition shows up as RAW, even though it has a drive letter. This usually means the formatting didn’t complete properly—often due to a system glitch, outdated drivers, or disk errors. The good news is your disk seems healthy since manual formatting works.

To fix and prevent this, I recommend manually formatting the partition after creation, running a quick disk check using chkdsk X: /f, and updating your storage drivers via Device Manager. For a clean setup, you can use Diskpart commands to create and format the partition reliably. Also, make sure your system is up to date by checking Windows Update, as Microsoft has released fixes for similar issues.

If Disk Management continues to misbehave, third-party tools like AOMEI Partition Assistant or MiniTool Partition Wizard can offer more stable results.

Let me know how it goes, and if this answer helps, feel free to hit “Accept Answer” so others can benefit too 😊

    T&B,

    Domic.
