How do I get my BitLocker key? A month ago Microsoft sent me an opportunity to download Win 11 so I did. I never even saw a hint or a mention of BitLocker or of a 48-digit code.

My husband manages our computers, and since I work from home at times, we have to be compliant with the job. When he installed Windows 10, he was not prompted about a Bitlocker key. When our organization instructed me last week that I needed to upgrade to Windows 11, my husband took the steps to complete that.
There was no notification when going to install Windows 11 that a bitlocker key was going to be needed. Are you KIDDING me. Every single tiny task - changing background color, deleting a file - you get asked sometimes multiple times if you want to complete the action. Yet when THE most important step you can take with Windows needs a bitlocker key, and there are no prompts, that's a MASSIVE fail on Microsoft's side. This will LOCK DOWN YOUR COMPUTER if you don't have it. There should be multiple warnings, and REPEATED asks if you have your damn bitlocker key before one single action proceeds.
My husband is not a novice. He's been working with computers for 40 years, and a programmer for 30 of those years. He's not stupid. He recorded every bitlocker key for all our other devices.
I don't mind reinstalling programs or anything like that on a new or reformatted drive. It's a slight annoyance. What I AM angry about is I lost 20 years of saved emails. Some very important ones. Angry doesn't even cover it, I don't know if there's a word.
I know this won't reach anyone at Microsoft, they couldn't give any less of a damn. I know I'm not the only one that's gone through this, seeing posts on various boards. If someone from MS is perhaps seeing this message It would be nice if ANYone at Microsoft that may have a heart, to please devise a way around this. This is MY computer, I bought it, it's not anyone else's. I'll get fingerprinted, give blood, a retina scan, whatever I have to do.
Maybe this is just one of the many reasons switching to MAC looks like the better option.

Have you looked into the Microsoft account here to see if it is stored there? https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
Any chance your laptop was purchased used, or already set up for you? Or was it gifted? Or have you set it up with a different account at first? The key is stored with the very Microsoft account used to set up the computer for the first time, even if you had got rid of that account and set it up with a different account. So, if your computer was set up by anyone at the store you bought it from, it would be that person's account.
If you set it up with school or work account, it is worth checking here as well https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey sign in with your work/school email credential in that case.
I assume you don't remember opting out of not saving it in Microsoft account, and saving it to a local file instead? That's another possibility.
If you can't find it at all, there's really no way to crack it. Bitlocker means business. If it can be cracked, then it means the encryption is not working. Your only option is to do a clean install of Windows. In that case, you do lose your files. I am very sorry. I hate to share this kind of information, but I rather give you the correct info.

I apologize, but there isn't another way to get around BitLocker if you can't find the right recovery key or keep running into the same problem. In this situation, a Clean Installation of Windows via USB flash drive would be required. Please be aware that the BitLocker encryption will be deactivated during this operation, and your data will be lost.
You will need to find another working Windows computer from a family member or friend near you to create the Windows 11 USB Installation media.
Find another working computer then download the Media Creation tool (Click Download tool now). Use the tool to "Create installation media (USB flash drive at least 8GB in size) to install Windows 11". Instructions inside the link.
Note: Please make sure to uncheck the "Use the recommended options for this PC" box. Please check the link below for more details.
